Review:
SHREK is one of the most popular movies of 2001. Its cute, funny, endearing, and fun. It has plenty of action, romance, comedy, and songs. It takes familiar themes (fairy tales, damsels in distress, villains, heroes, and beauty and the beast) and presents something new. It’s a movie from the ogre’s point of view and they have done an outstanding job of creating and animating a character that is both a beast and lovable, ugly and beautiful. The movie is entirely computer animation and I kept fixating on the wonderful expressions they gave Shrek. Its state of the art effects enhanced the story rather than is the story. By now this once novel medium is getting to be old hat, but so well done. It also has some nice plot twists such as both beauty and the beast being both ugly and beautiful.
The animation and fairy tale themes make it seem obvious for children. My three year old loved the fairy tale characters, but not all the “scary fighting”. However, older children and adults will get the most out of it. It is filled with jokes and sight gags, but many of them are lost on children. So this is a family movie that parents will enjoy watching too. |

Best Scene:
Like so many times before, the village mob is storming off to deal with the monster. They are carrying the pitch forks and torches and working themselves into a mob frenzy sure to sweep everything from their path. They reach the Ogre’s lair and are ready to seize him. The two sides are face to face, toe to toe, eyeball to eyeball. But this time it is the Ogre who carries not a worry and confronts the scary mob. It ends with Shrek telling the leader, “This is the point where you run away” and the mob does skeedaddle pretty fast without bagging the Ogre. |
