AGE OF RENAISSANCE is one of Avalon Hill's last games. It has elements of both 'Advanced Civilization' and 'History of the World'. 3 to 6 players control western civilizations at the beginning of the Renaissance and advance thru 3 epoques to the Age of Enlightenment. You advance by expanding into regions to control certain commodities, buying advances which province additional abilities, and playing your cards right to help you and hurt your competitors. The map includes Europe, the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and two expansion areas, the Far East and New World. You win by getting the most victory points by adding the value of your advances and your cash and subtracting your Misery Index. You do this each turn by drawing card(s) and playing cards, purchasing, expanding, and bookkeeping. All phases except bookkeeping is done in player order. Cards vary by epoque, but consist of commodity payoffs for regions players control, good and bad events, and leaders which can help in certain ways. There are widely varying opinions about this game that seem to depend somewhat on player’s style of play and view of ADVANCED CIVILIZATION. On the plus side are: * it provides a new twist on the 'Advanced Civ' theme, * it can be played in 4-6 hours, * it employs military, economic, diplomatic, technological, and imperialism elements. * its mostly coastal regions mean anyone can reach anyone else, especially to gang up on the leader. Criticisms include: * a poorly written 20 page rule book (although it does include a sample game), * the first few turns are important as it can take awhile to recover from a poor position, * its not a sequel to 'ADVANCED CIV' and this realization can lead some people to disillusionment.
